WORDPLAY LITERACY PROGRAM

WordPlay: Using Scrabble to Strengthen Literacy & Critical Thinking

WordPlay is De-YELF’s literacy initiative designed to make learning active, enjoyable and intellectually challenging.

Learning Through Play

WordPlay uses Scrabble and related word activities to help students strengthen vocabulary, spelling, strategic thinking, problem-solving and communication. The aim is to make literacy something young people actively practise, not simply something they study.

Why Scrabble?

Every game requires participants to recognise words, make decisions, calculate possibilities, adapt their strategies and learn from others. Those same habits support stronger literacy and critical-thinking skills.

WordPlay in Schools

Through school engagement, interactive word labs and WordPlay Fellows, De-YELF creates learning environments where young people can explore language, build confidence and enjoy intellectual challenge.

WordPlay 2025

The flagship 2025 initiative was themed “Scrabble: A Tool for Literacy Development.” It brought together students, facilitators and WordPlay Fellows for structured, interactive literacy activities in participating secondary schools in Ibadan.
